Edmonton International is making room for Drone Delivery by\nsigning a 5-year agreement with Drone Delivery Canada (DDC).  It is expected to be the world’s first\nregularly scheduled drone delivery service from an airport with active airspace.  The excitement of the future, however, isn\u2019t\nshared by everyone.  Comments on the news\nstory include condemnation, concern, and fear of anything from loss of jobs to\nhacking the controlling computer repair of potential damage, and loss of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drones Risking Lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Concern is high with news stories like the 2017 story of a charter\nplane with passengers colliding with a hobby drone on its final approach to Jean\nLesage International Airport.  With landing\nand takeoff being the most critical time during flight, this could\u2019ve ended in\ndisaster.  Or the US Army Blackhawk that\ncollided with a Drone while patrolling a UN meeting earlier that year.  The Blackhawk was damaged but was able to\nland safely.  The Blackhawk is designed\nto take heavy damage and still operate. \nA passenger helicopter would not have fared so well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, a hobby drone film was uploaded to the internet.  The drone flew within a few meters of an\nairliner on approach to Las Vegas airport. \nThe event was investigated by the FAA. \nThis was apparently a situation with innocent intentions, but, came dangerously\nclose to destroying hundreds of thousands of dollars in property or possibly\neven human lives.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, just a few weeks ago in September 2019 both VietJet\n& Tway Air had planes landing in Saigon with heavy damage caused by a\npossible UAV collision.  Again, this damage\nis far heavier than a bird.  The damage\nis potentially crippling to a manned aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drone Damage Capability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On top of these real-life scenarios, there is also some\nimagination at work here.  Some of the\ncomments seem to play off imaginary fears that have played out in some\nHollywood movie such as this clip from Oblivion: https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-QOahlrO8Yo<\/a>.  Although this is imaginary, the actual damage\na UAV or hobby drone can do to a passenger jet is real.  Researchers at the University of Dayton\nresearch institute conducted an experiment to determine what would happen.  In this video, the drone does heavy damage to\nthe wing, lodging itself deep into the wing, potentially striking fuel takes,\nactuators, and other critical components. https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QH0V7kp-xg0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Allow Drones?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whether real, or imaginary, people are concerned with drones\nbeing allowed in active airspace.  So with\nthe stories and possibilities of human life being in danger, why has Edmonton\nInternational signed a deal to allow these drone to fly around in active\nairspace?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The truth is, there is risk with all aircraft, manned or\nunmanned.  However, the risk is severely\nreduced when everyone is on the same page. \nThis is why each airport in the world controls their airspace with Air\nTraffic Control.  Drone Delivery Canada is\nworking with Edmonton International Air Traffic Control on flight plans, flight\napproval, and incoming\/outgoing flights. \nThey are actually entering active airspace legally and as safe as any\nother aircraft.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shipping in Active Airspace: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shipping in active airspace is far different than the hobbies\ndrones from the stories above.  Because\nthese drones are professionally piloted and tracked by Air Traffic Control,\nsuccessful flights are much more likely. In fact, DDC isn\u2019t the only company\nworking on unmanned shipping out of airports. \nA much more familiar name is currently seeking approval.  United Postal Service (UPS)  has just received approval from the FAA to\nbegin building a Drone Airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Drones are Safe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Now, don\u2019t think that any drone is safe to just approach an\nairport or to attempt shipping operations. \nThey need to abide by flight rules governed by the Transport Canada\nCivil Aviation.  As long as everyone is\nfollowing the rules and taking proper precautions, Edmonton will be safe AND will\nbe on the cutting edge of technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
