Apple announced its self repair service which is expected to start this year. This program will give apple users access to apple’s genuine parts, tools, and training manual.

According to Jeff Williams, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer said:
“Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed” which means if you are tech-savvy and you’re willing to fix your Apple product in your home, you can now do that with ease.
This service will be available in the United States and will expand to more countries throughout 2022. Apple said it now has over 5000 certified Apple service providers and 2800 independent repair providers.
“In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”

Apple plans to start by focusing on common repair issues which include screens, batteries, and camera replacement and repairs for iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and M1 MacBook.

How to get the Apple Self Repair Service

Customers can visit the Self Repair Service online store to place orders for the Apple parts and tools they need.
Also, customers who return old parts of their spoilt or broken repair kits for recycling will receive incentives from Apple. Despite the introduction of the self repair service, Apple still encourages its customers to visit professional and certified service providers.
“Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.”

Why does Apple want us to Self Repair?

For many years, consumers have accused Apple of intentionally making their products difficult or nearly impossible for self-repair. Many people think Apple made their self repair announcement following Joe Biden’s order directing the Federal Trade Commisions to regulate limiting device manufacturers’ ability to restrict self repairs.
“These types of restrictions can significantly raise costs for consumers, stifle innovation, close off business opportunity for independent repair shops, create unnecessary electronic waste, delay timely repairs, and undermine resiliency” – Lina M. Khan, Federal Trade Commisions’ Chairperson.

With this new “Self Repair Service” from Apple, many are curious about how Apple will run the program smoothly and there have been different reactions from Apple technicians and consumers.

Apple is yet to publish the prices of its parts and tools for repair. However, Apple has promised to sell its tools and parts to Authorized repair services and customers at the same price.
